lighteningWhenever a book gets “hot” with the kids, I know if I haven’t read it, I better.  For the last few months, from 5th grade through Middle School, kids have been asking me, “How can you not have read the Lightning Thief yet?”

Good question, since I know that the series of books by Rick Riordan is very popular – and when I see lots of boys reading, I take notice.  With the release date of the movie fast approaching (Friday, February 12th) I knew I had to read the book now – because as popular as the book is already, after the movie comes out – the book’s popularity should be due to really take off.

I have a large pile of books next to my reading chair – my “must read books pile”  The Lightning Thief just got upgraded from 5th in the pile to the top.

So I settled down this last weekend with the book.  With the rain and wind pounding on the windows, I got totally involved by the time I read the first sentence, “I accidentally vaporize my pre-algebra teacher”.  Now I know why the kids love this book so much.  I pretty much read the book all the way through without stopping (just for food, sleep, and other necessary breaks)

They were right – this is a great book to read, full of adventure, suspense, and humor and believe it or not – lots of cool Greek mythology- a subject that when I studied it in school, didn’t seem half as exciting as it does when presented in this book.

I’m sure that now that I have become acquainted with Percy Jackson & The Olympians, I’ll make my way through The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of Labyrinth and The Last Olympian.  You should too – the kids were right – these books are cool.

Happy Reading!
