According to author Laura Dower’s website – there are 21 Madison Finn books so this series could keep you busy for a long time! Rebecca thinks girls ages 8-12 would enjoy these books.

Lydia – 5th grade

Lydia shared about the book “The Tail of Emily Windsnap” The story is about a  7th grade girl named Emily Windsnap who discovers in swim class that she is a mermaid.  The book is full of adventures including her search for her father, a merman. Lydia liked this book because it was adventurous and a descriptive fantasy book. She recommends it to girls ages 8-12.

 Kiana – 5th grade

Kiana’s choice for a book was “The Lightning Thief” by Rick Riordan. This is book one of a series that includes The Sea of Monsters, The Titans Curse and The Battle of Labyrinth. The story is about a 12 year of boy named Percy, who discovers he is a demigod.  His father is Poseidon, and he has been accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt, and unless Percy can return the bolt, humankind is doomed.  Kiana says this book is an action packed adventure that both boys & girls ages 10+ would enjoy.

Naba – 5th grade

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Last Straw” was Naba’s pick for current favorite read. The reason?  “It’s funny!” she said. Both boys & girls ages 9+ will agree.  Naba likes the character, Greg and his family, which include an annoying big brother and pesky little brother. She feels the cartoon drawings add great humor to this fun book .

Eric

Eric shared about the series “Diary of A Wimpy Kid”  He feels the books are funny and realistic and easy to relate to.  His favorite part of the book was “The Cheese Touch” – a moldy piece of cheese that is a lot like “cooties”

Kellen

Kellen’s book to tell us about was “Hatchet” by Gary Paulson. The story is about a boy that survives a plane crash and is stranded in the wilderness with only a hatchet to survive.  Kellen felt that the story had adventure and excitement and would be enjoyed by other 5th graders.

Kyle

Kyle liked the book “The Basket Counts” by Matt Christopher. This author is known for his sports books, and Kyle had a great observation that while there are many non-fiction books about sports, this is one of the few fiction series about sports.  Matt Christopher has also written books about soccer, baseball, football and skateboarding that other 5th graders might like to check out.

 Jacob

Jacob shared about the “The Series of Unfortunate Events” One of the things he likes about the books is the action and suspense. He also observed that unlike some other books, the “good guys” don’t always win in the end, and the “bad guys” don’t always lose.  We wonder if series is really over with book 13 – or will more sequels ever be written?

Shivam

Shivam’s choice to share was “Around the World in 80 Days” A classic since it was originally published in 1872, Shivam found this book a real page turner – the kind that keeps you in suspense.  The main character, Phileas Fogg of London, accepts the challenge to travel “Around the World in 80 Days” Does he make it? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
