larryI’ve been watching the NBA finals with a bit of sentimental sadness.  I was born in Vermont, so being from New England, I’m supposed to root for the Celtics.  I moved to Los Angeles in 1974 – and much to the horror of my East Coast family, I became a Lakers’ fan.

It was so easy to do –especially with “Showtime” during the 1980’s with basketball legends such as Magic Johnson, Kareem, and James Worthy.

My stepdad Skip was a Celtics fan, and we had a friendly rivalry of Celtics vs. Lakers for years.  When either of our teams beat the other, it was a guaranteed phone call to rub in the victory to the loser.  Winning an NBA championship was worth at least a month of gloating. We had countless arguments over who was superior – Larry or Magic.

Our family lost Skip in 2002.  I miss him still, and this week particularly as I’ve watched the Lakers and Celtics square off I’ve been thinking of him.  Last year Larry Bird and Magic Johnson released a book, “When The Game Was Ours”  He would have loved it.  With Father’s Day approaching – I would recommend this book to anyone else that might have had a Laker/Celtic rivalry with their Dad.

So go Lakers!  Go Celtics!
And Happy Reading!
