My son has read all of the Harry Potter series. Can you recommend something else he would like ?

It sounds like your son likes adventure/fantasy books.  Harry Potter was such a huge hit with readers partly due to the skillful way that J.K. Rowling spun her stories.  Just when you would reach the end of a chapter, she would throw her audience a plot twist – and eager readers would keep turning pages to see what happens next.

Here are some other books your son may enjoy: The Artemis Fowl series (by Eoin Colfer) might be a good one for him to try.  It is a series of books that combine adventure & action – sort of a cross between Sherlock Holmes and James Bond.  Another great book by Eoin Colfer is “Airman” – definately a good read for those that have dreamed of flying.

Another popular author is Rick Riordan.  His books The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, and The Battle of the Labyrinth (read them in that order) have readers enthralled with its action and humor.

Other good options would be the Eragon/Eldest/Brisingr series by Christopher Paolini, the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, or The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien.

For those junior readers that enjoy mysteries or adventure books but are not quite at the reading level yet to Harry Potter – I would recommend The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osbourne or the A-Z mysteries by Ron Roy.  These easy chapter books (ideal for 2nd – 3rd graders) will give them the action and adventure they crave until they are advanced enough to read more mature books such as Harry Potter.

Happy Reading!

I'm often asked how by parents - "how do I get my child interested in reading?"

My answer is - find things that interest them to read!

Young boys can often be a challenge - especially in grades 3-5.

Books that are popular with this age include Goosebumps, Calvin & Hobbes, "Bone" books and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Even comic books can help your child get used to picking up something to read. Don't worry if its not great literature - that can come later!
