With graduation right around the corner I am often asked if there is a good book to give as a gift to grads. My favorite book is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” by Dr. Seuss. This book is perfect for nursery school grads to those completing their college education. The message is simple and touching. It is about the choices we make, and the ups and downs of life. The very last book written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss – it reminds us that “you have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose” Happy Graduation! The Book Lady |

With the tradition school year soon coming to an end – I know all those students out there are looking forward to summer and “giving their brains a break” from learning. Parents beware – statistics show that children can lose up to 2 grade levels over the summer if they don’t actively read during their school break. How much should they be reading? For most students – especially grades 1-5 it is recommend that they read 4-6 books over the summer. (Taking into consideration the length of the book – a Harry Potter with 500 pages would count as 2-3 books) Summer is the perfect time to adventure to your local library. Get to know your librarian – they have lots of wonderful information on helping children read in the summer. Many libraries offer reading clubs – another way to get your child excited about reading! You can also find more helpful hints to “stop the summer slide” online at the Scholastic Summer Challenge (www.scholastic.com/summer) Happy Reading! The Book Lady |
