redpyramidIn February I wrote about, “The Lightning Thief” – a fun book written by Rick Riordan (and the equally popular sequels Sea of Monsters, Titan’s Curse, Battle of Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian)

Author Rick Riordan spins a powerful story in these  fantasy/adventure novels based on Greek mythology, which charts the adventures of modern day twelve-year-old Percy Jackson as he discovers he is a demigod, the son of a mortal woman and the Greek god Poseidon. Percy and his friends go on a quest to prevent an apocalyptic war between the Greek gods Zeus, Poseidon and Hades.

I enjoyed how much kids were reading these books - and they were learning Greek mythology at the same time!

Just released on May 4th – Rick Riordan has penned another series – starting with book one called, “The Red Pyramid” (The Kane Chronicles, Book 1)

After reading the description – I admit it looks intriguing.

A pair of siblings – a father who is a brilliant Egyptologist, and after an outing to the British Museum unleashes the Egyptian God Set; the children are forced to flee for their lives.  The siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe…..oh well; I guess I will be settling in this weekend with a copy to see what happens.

Happy Reading

I never thought I would love this….

I was single until age 45 – never married until July 6, 2007.  With my 3rd wedding anniversary approaching – I was thinking about things that have changed since I got married (like giving up possession of the remote control)

mnkOne thing I never envisioned was some of the television shows that would be introduced to me by my husband.  I was aware of such channels like the History Channel, Discovery, etc – but I must admit I was more inclined to watch TLC, HGTV, Lifetime….

I remember one time while we were dating visiting Michael at his condo.  He had the Discovery channel on – and told me he was watching crab fishing.  Prepared to be really bored (but wanting to be a good girlfriend) I settled in to watch, “Deadliest Catch”  After he explained the basics (crab, pots, frigid cold water, huge waves crashing into the boat) I watched with semi-interest.  Realizing it was a weekly show, and he really enjoyed it – I decided to become more involved in this interest of his – and started to learn the different characters on the show. After a couple of episodes, I found myself sucked in like the crab they were pulling from the pots.

I soon discovered there were books about crab fishing – several of the captains of the boats have written their stories of their adventuresnorth at sea and I now had ideas for birthday and Christmas presents.

Believe it or not, I started to find it as exciting as Michael did, and yes – when we went to Alaska for our honeymoon – we went crab fishing (although we were in a tame harbor and not out on the Bering Sea) I now consider myself a “Deadliest Catch” fan.  When Captain Phil Harris of the Cornelia Marie died in February, I mourned him and truly felt sad.

So it was no surprise that when Captain Sig Hansen released a book on March 30th I was in line at the bookstore to buy it for my husband, and waited patiently until he finished it so I could read it (ok – maybe not that patiently)

So – lesson learned – never say never – because if you had asked me five years ago if I would be reading books about crab fishing, watching TV shows about crab fishing – and would have actually been excited to be going crab fishing on my honeymoon – I really wouldn’t have believed you, but I can admit it now – I really do love it.
